5408 Tryon Road

In April of 2025, we became aware of an existing church on the market that met many of our requirements. As of May, we are under contract and conducting due diligence. Our parish will vote on whether to complete the purchase at the end of June. Click here to read the full story.

Q&A about the Tryon Rd. property

Below are the questions we’ve received to date. Click each question to see its answer. If you have a question that’s not answered here, please use the form at the bottom of the page to send it and we’ll do our best to provide an answer.

  • In total, the Tryon church offers 7,159 square feet of space, compared to 4,416 square feet in our current church. Square footage breaks down as follows:

    • 1,295 sq ft nave (exclusive of altar)

    • 880 sq ft fellowship hall (exclusive of kitchen and bathrooms)

    • 2,123 sq ft building with classroom/office space

The existing structure offers ample space for our current faithful, with opportunities to expand if we wish to do so.

While it’s important to compare the sizes of the properties, it’s also critical to remember that we aren’t building a mega-church. One priest cannot effectively minister to an unlimited number of parishioners.

The Orthodox model is for healthy, growing parishes to create and support mission churches. Regardless of where we move, missions in the Triangle area will become our future focus.

  • Depending upon how eager we are to move in, we can set up a temporary altar space very quickly. Eventually, we’d like to remove the baptistery and build a permanent iconostasis.

  • Yes, but we would like to make some improvements. Before moving in, we plan to build a handicap ramp at the front door. Access to the basement fellowship hall is similar to what we have currently—walking outside and around the building to the back door. With enough funding, improving handicap access to the fellowship hall will be a top priority. At this time, an elevator between the two floors appears to be feasible.

  • No. The choir will be set up near the front of the nave.

  • The church is currently on well water and septic. Sewer is available at two access points adjacent to the property.

  • The property is located in Raleigh’s ETJ, which means it is outside of Raleigh city limits but subject to Raleigh zoning and building regulations. Click here to learn more about Raleigh’s ETJ.

  • The property is currently zoned for a church, and we are unaware of any zoning restrictions at this time. We do know that there is a creek at the very back of the property that would require a buffer.

Our due diligence process includes research on this matter. However, as we’ve learned in the past, it’s difficult to get clear answers about permitting issues when you don’t own a property.
